 Advent and Christmas
are not sentimental feasts
around a helpless babe.
They proclaim: The King was born!
The King conquers!
The King is coming! The King is coming indeed!"

Devotional thoughts for most days, for those who depend on the grace and mercy of God in Jesus Christ. These thoughts are Bible based and inspired by my Reformed tradition.

Out of all the people Jesus could have chosen to call to be part of his faith community, he chose Levi, also known as Matthew, a tax collector. They were the most hated men in all Israel.

When Paul says we are not under law, but under grace (Rom 6:14), isn't he also saying there is no longer any place for the law and any value in it? When John the Baptist said the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus (Jn 1:17), was he not also saying the same thing? Someone once said, "We are a New Testament not an Old Testament church. It is the New Testament we should teach and not the Old."

Whenever we find our faith wavering, our hope growing dim and our concerns about all facets of life we have to deal with discouraging, we should spend some time reflecting on the truth that Christ came to save sinners. Our failure to love, to believe or to hope and our inability to live for God show that we are sinners. We know that all of us need saving and that none of us can save ourselves.

There is a judgment day! Instead of keeping his vineyard, God will remove its protective hedge, allowing it to be ravaged. Instead of planting choice vines, God will allow briars and thorns to overtake the vineyard.

Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his Name; worship the Lord in the splendour of his holiness.

As soldiers guarding a fortress,
wait for the sun to rise,
for countless, endless hours,
through nights with darkest skies:
So I wait on the LORD God,
I’m waiting long, it’s hard!
But God in grace and mercy,
will not my plea discard.

Faith is our response to God’s Word.  It is our earnest trust that the Good News about Jesus is the Truth. The authenticity of this faith is proven by the way we love one another.
