 Advent and Christmas
are not sentimental feasts
around a helpless babe.
They proclaim: The King was born!
The King conquers!
The King is coming! The King is coming indeed!"

Devotional thoughts for most days, for those who depend on the grace and mercy of God in Jesus Christ. These thoughts are Bible based and inspired by my Reformed tradition.

Jesus is alive, because his work as risen Lord in and amongst us has not been completed...

Palm Sunday is a universal Christian feast celebrated on the Sunday one week before Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday is the first service of Holy Week.

We are baffled by the behaviour of the characters in a strange parable that Jesus told and is found in  Matthew 22: 1 – 14.

An initial invitation to come to a feast in honour of the king’s son to celebrate his wedding, is met with rejection from the king’s inner circle (verse 3).  We know that nobody in elitist circles turns down such a royal summons.

There on the shore of Libya knelt 21 young Christian Egyptian men, all wearing orange jumpsuits. Behind each man is a radical Islamist, holding a knife.
And we all know what happened then...

Jesus said: “For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world - to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice." (John18:37)

Being a Christian must be lived in every aspect of our lives. To love God with all our strength means to love God with everything that we do.

We are not only to love God with all our heart, we are to love him with all your soul and all our mind.

The soul speaks of our emotions. To love God with all our soul means that our love for God ought to be passionate. When we think of love we think of passion.

How is this love relationship to be worked out? There are many similarities with other love affairs, (yes I know it’s not exactly the same as falling in love with a partner!)
Jesus gives us four ways to work it out: with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind and all your strength.

Love is not easy to define! It may be the topic that is the most thought about, written about, talked about, dreamt about and sung about. It has been called the “thing that makes the world go round” and "a many splendored thing" - and many more. The love story has been written about in poetry, in songs, in literature, in novels and for movies.
