James asks an important question. What causes fights and quarrels among you? It is certainly a relevant question. It is as relevant today as it was when James wrote his letter. There is an attack om marriages! On family relationships! Amongst friends and comrades! There even are a variety of conflicts within churches! Conflict may be one of the biggest causes of emotional distress: Fear, feelings of inferiority, loneliness, lack of purpose and grateful, joyful living! Conflicts of various kinds may be one of the main causes of depression and burn-out!

Jesus gave us a clear command when he said that we must “do this in remembrance of him.” To stay away from the Lord’s table, without any reason, or rather good reason, is to shun the Lord and his plan and intention to comfort us and build us up in our holy faith at his table! It is the Lord who invites, no, urges us, to share in this means of his grace.

The Word of God praises the role of the mind as an essential part of doing what is right and our growing through sanctification. Our faith emphasises the truth that how we behave and what we think (believe) influence each other. What we think and believe and what we do, act on each other.
