They proclaim: The King was born!
The King conquers!
The King is coming! The King is coming indeed!"

Devotional thoughts for most days, for those who depend on the grace and mercy of God in Jesus Christ. These thoughts are Bible based and inspired by my Reformed tradition.

We all need the power of prayer in the Name of Jesus. And we will only experience powerful prayer in the Name of Jesus, if our prayers are guided by the Holy Spirit.

On Sunday we will be sitting in our quaint, beautiful chapel, sharing bread and wine. Yet this experience will call upon our senses and our memories and we will find ourselves being taken 2000 years and a continent away, to an upper room in Jerusalem where Jesus and his 12 disciples first shared this very Supper.

It is no longer I that liveth
but Christ that liveth in me.
He lives, He lives,
Jesus is alive in me.
It is no longer I that liveth
but Christ that liveth in me

We need to admit what we feel. Denial of our feelings will simply suppress them and not allow us to deal with them in a healthy way. Even if we try to suppress our emotions, it will eventually surface again and then it could return in destructive outcomes.

We all know that both positive and destructive emotions are part of being us and being human. Joy, pleasure, love, pity, compassion and optimism are positive, motivating experiences. Loneliness, confusion, sadness, despair, anxiety, anger, and even hatred are destructive emotions and can ruin lives if not dealt with positively.

The five things that make a good church leader, written by the Rev Sue Washburn, bi-vocational minister at Reunion Presbyterian Church in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania  (slightly South-Africanised!)

I find it hard to focus on joy and gladness right now!  Deep concerns about the way our country’s finances is managed, the plummeting of hope that our politicians will be wise and good in handling anger and despondency as a result of poverty and hunger, inequality and corruption – and many other issues - cloud my vision of a congregation passionately singing “Joy to the world, the Lord is come”, with sincerity!

Rev 12:12:  Therefore rejoice you heavens and you who dwell in them!
But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.

First Advent Sunday: Lighting the candle of hope.

We must know that people have to, and try to touch Jesus.  It is not always so visible, so obvious.  They may say quite the opposite.   But people need God and the power of God in their lives.  The only way that the Bible shows us to receive and live by the power of God, is to touch Jesus.  This means, to have an intimate relationship with him.
