Devotional thoughts for most days, for those who depend on the grace and mercy of God in Jesus Christ. These thoughts are Bible based and inspired by my Reformed tradition.

Ephesians 2: 1 – 7:
And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. We were by nature children of wrath.  But God, being rich in mercy, made us alive together with Christ and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus.

We all need the power of prayer in the Name of Jesus. And we will only experience powerful prayer in the Name of Jesus, if our prayers are guided by the Holy Spirit.

On Sunday we will be sitting in our quaint, beautiful chapel, sharing bread and wine. Yet this experience will call upon our senses and our memories and we will find ourselves being taken 2000 years and a continent away, to an upper room in Jerusalem where Jesus and his 12 disciples first shared this very Supper.

During the Tenebrae liturgy on Maundy Thursday, we are asked to meditate on the fact that it was on the Thursday evening before Good Friday that Jesus and his disciples were together for the last time, when he and they stood in the shadow of the cross, when he washed their feet and instituted the Holy Supper.

It is no longer I that liveth
but Christ that liveth in me.
He lives, He lives,
Jesus is alive in me.
It is no longer I that liveth
but Christ that liveth in me

We need to admit what we feel. Denial of our feelings will simply suppress them and not allow us to deal with them in a healthy way. Even if we try to suppress our emotions, it will eventually surface again and then it could return in destructive outcomes.

We all know that both positive and destructive emotions are part of being us and being human. Joy, pleasure, love, pity, compassion and optimism are positive, motivating experiences. Loneliness, confusion, sadness, despair, anxiety, anger, and even hatred are destructive emotions and can ruin lives if not dealt with positively.

In Church tradition, where the birth of Christ is celebrated on December 25, the visit of the Wise Men is celebrated on January 6, and it is called the Feast of Epiphany – where epiphany means enlightenment and revelation.
This feast had been celebrated for a long time before the Church decided to remember the birthday of Jesus on 25 December.

There is a lot of lip service paid to Christ during the Festive Season.   As the time for the holidays approaches, most people begin to have Christmas parties, celebrating in the name of Christmas and even sing Christmas carols. Celebrities who would usually never say the Name of Christ – except when swearing - enthusiastically sing his birthday songs on prime time TV. And after the Season is over, continue to act as if nothing significant happened.
